Why Black People Did Not Like "The Book Of Clarence" (and why they are wrong)
SPOILER ALERT: I will be discussing things in this article that are not readily available in trailers and might spoil the viewing experience if you have not watched the movie yet, but intend to do so some time in the future. Read at your own risk.
A lot of the African American people online I follow complained that they either did not like, or did not understand "The Book of Clarence." I was thoroughly confused by the realization that I was the only one that enjoyed it and felt like I understood it completely. I wondered if it is, because I (unlike most people) read the entire Bible from cover to cover back in my super religious days, or because I have studied literature and film making because of my intention to one day write an epic story one day.
As a result, I happened to picked up on things in the movie that a lot of people seemed to miss. For example, the fact that in the Bible it says that Thomas was often called "Didymus" which means "Twin" in Latin. I listened to this movie review podcast and they hated the movie. (See Note below) One of the things they said was, "we don't know of any twin disciples." So, it is clear that this point was missed on them. In fact, they thought that the fact that Lakeith Stanfield played both Thomas and Clarence was some sort of commentary on two sides of the self.
