Do What You Love And The Money Will Come

When I graduated from college during the great recession of 2007/2008, I was very lost and confused. I did not know what I wanted to do. I believe that was because I spent most of my life taking direction from other people. I spent most of my life looking to other people for answers.

Behaving like this left me feeling depressed. I ended up speaking to therapists, going to church, seeking advice from everyone I could. Until one day in 2009, someone said something to me that stuck with me. I remember it because it seemed so obvious yet so ridiculous. It was my sister's boyfriend. I told him I was having trouble picking a career and I don't know what I want to do with my life. He said to me:

"Do what you love and the money will come."

It was a hard pill to swallow. I had grown up my whole life being obedient to someone or some people's rules, and it was difficult for me to search within myself. First of all, "what do I love?" Everything I have done so far has been for the sake of making my parents proud of me, or getting an A in school, or because I am supposed to. I had never really considered myself. I had put myself on the back burner for so long that I did not know what I loved. "and how soon will the money come?" Also, what if the money doesn't come immediately, what do I do?
